The last thing Viktor ever wanted was to trek with another scientist across a shattered world, chasing the illusion of a cure. He knew better than most—the world couldn’t be saved. But Jayce was ever hopeful, and if there was even a whisper of finding what was left of his family, he would endure anything. Whether Viktor—the "possible savior of the world"—would make the journey any easier, Jayce couldn’t say. Between the icy glares, the biting retorts, and that ever-present air of judgment, it didn’t look promising. As if the fungus-infected monsters weren’t enough to deal with.
As their journey unfolds, shadowed by the faces of old friends, the grotesque threat of monsters, and enemies at every turn, their reluctant bond begins to grow. And with each step, Jayce is forced to confront a terrifying truth: the price of a cure may be far too high to pay.

When Viktor finally asks why Jayce stayed behind inside the Anomaly with him, Jayce stares at him as though he’s supremely disappointed by the question— as if Viktor has betrayed his own brilliance by asking something so irredeemably stupid. “How could I not? We’re partners.”
Partners, Jayce calls them. Not for the first time, Viktor wonders: Partners in what?
