Summary

Summary
Spoilers for The Hanged Man by ellispark.
Dean is hanged after his plans for mutiny and escape from the cult he was raised in are found out, but survives as he is discovered just in time by a park ranger with blue eyes and PTSD. He later learns that the cult's leader, his father Samuel Campbell, and his mother Deanna are actually his grandparents, and Samuel abducted him from a supermarket as a child to get back at his daughter Mary for leaving him. The seeds of revolution that Dean managed to sow before his attempted execution help Deanna and the half of the camp not loyal to Samuel escape. Reunited with both his biological families as well as finding a new one in Cas and Bobby at the Park, Dean has everything he needs to make a new beginning. Except escaping his past may not be as simple as refusing to look back at it, and though Dean might not live in an apocalypse shelter in the middle of the forest anymore, something tells him he isn't yet out of the woods.
An analysis of complicity, and of the grey space between victimhood and monstrosity where the bystander will go to die. Basically my love letter to what is undoubtedly one of the finest thrillers I have read this year, please do check that out.
