As an EMT, Dean Winchester has seen both the ups and downs of what soulmates can do to each other. He rejects the very idea that one person is your person and once you hear their voice you belong to them. To him it feels like a forced relationship that there is only one way out of.
Castiel Novak, profoundly deaf since childhood, doubts he will ever find his soulmate. Even if he did, how would he ever know? Rather than let that diminish his happiness, he creates the website Solemates for others like himself, who have either lost their soulmate or aren't looking for one for whatever reason. It's a place to find support and understanding.
After a friend directs him to Solemates, despite some trepidation, Dean begins to read and comment on posts. That's how he meets blue_eyed_angel. They hit it off, so they chat and get to know each other for a while. After they exchange numbers, Dean realizes he’s falling for the guy. It's inevitable that they start to think about meeting in real life...
