For an elf, attending the academy for more than two years was embarrassing. It was shameful to take more than four to make it to the tower. Taking the full six years was utterly disgraceful. As elves they were above the mages the academy was built to serve, and though its bureaucracy was the only way into the tower they were never to give even the impression that such a lowly place could improve them. The academy was a ceremonial step for them to reach greater heights with the good graces of society, and anyone who lingered was barely an elf at all.
Being an “elf” who couldn’t even graduate would be the ultimate humiliation. Nobody would respect them.

Hypnos likes his new job. He sees his family almost every day, he's met a lot of cool new people---it's not even really that hard! Sure, his family still isn't actually talking to him much (much less his new coworkers). Maybe he has trouble sometimes and the work piles up, but it's fine. While he can't take any effort from fulfilling his function for the living, there are corners he can cut. He just needs to spend less energy on himself and his non-essential customers in the underworld. He'll make it up to them and himself when he catches up with the workload. It'll be fine.
