Summary
A passerby on the street might not have noticed two young men in pale clothes, walking step for step, their sleeves brushing, but that same passerby might have taken a second look at the pair when they stopped in front of one of the city’s finest houses, and seen a short drama play out with the guards at the door.
The passerby might have observed at this point that one wore a mask, and that this one hung back, almost fading into the glow of the early morning light, while the other humbly approached the guards, and, after a brief and apparently unsatisfactory exchange, had first gestured to his companion, and then shown something in his hand, and at last been granted admittance.
And perhaps, one day, the passerby might think back to that morning, and realize that they had quite the tale to tell their grandchildren. But, like so many half-seen and half-forgotten things, their recollections would not have approached the truth of what began to unfold beyond the doors of the Shen residence that day.
