Summary
The smell hits them first.
Before they hear anything, before they see anything, there’s the smell.
First just smoke, which isn’t too unusual; even here in these god-forsaken caves smoke isn’t uncommon. The torches they’ve seen at random intervals throughout the space leave the smell of smoke as they go, the smell of burning fabric and tallow common. Familiar.
Then the smell of cooked meat and burnt skin fades in the longer they walk, getting stronger and stronger until it’s a blanket over everything.

Keith could feel his glamor flickering. There were sounds of a fight, but they sounded far away. He went limp in the hold on him, his vision tunneling. Keith could hear the pained grunts of the Paladins as they were subdued.
“Prince Lotor wants his pet returned to him. It's been far too long.”
Hands pried his mouth open, a foul liquid dumped down his throat. The familiar taste had his eyes widening, pupils slitting.
Damn this, and damn them .
He let his glamor slip, the furious roar that tore from his throat shook the forest.
Keith was not going back there, and he would die fighting for his freedom.

If they’d known when they took the contract with the Slayer’s Take that Manticore by no means meant only one of the goddamn things, thought Vax, viciously, then they might have come a little better prepared. Healing potions, a full night’s sleep, all their spells – rather than no potions, a night out drinking, and half Pike’s heavenly light spent on easing all of their hangovers.
(In which Vox Machina is rather overconfident in their manticore-slaying abilities, and Vax pays the price for it.)
