    Miorine has never known fire before. 

    Not the way that it was intended. Not the way that it truly existed. 

    She understands the sensation of heat on her skin — the feeling of touching the side of a mobile suit with smoke still billowing out of the engine. She remembers the way that the pain radiates deep into her flesh, lingering under her skin even as healing balms and sprays are applied. There’s a small scar on the tip of her index finger, where the burn had first taken root. 

    She understands the controlled flame of a thruster — nearly perfect droplet shape of blue fire. Little teardrops travelling through space, the cries of a people trying to find their place amongst the stars but never quite finding a home. 

    She understands that fire is nothing more than the oxidation of fuel in combustion, creating heat and light and gases. But nothing on the page quite lends her the understanding that she could get from standing in front of a raging inferno itself.

    Miorine has never known fire before. 

    And then she meets Suletta.

    Red is also a troublesome color. One that rushes toward her like she’s dancing on sunlight when Miorine blooms into her vision.

    It’s irritating the way Miorine feels her arms reflexively move to return the embrace. It’s completely unacceptable the way her heart melts, and she catches Suletta’s soft cheeks between her fingertips. It’s annoying that she wants to lean in and kiss those puckered lips that are mumbling her name with stuttered confusion.

    She tells her, “You’re annoying.”

    Suletta smiles with her round cheeks squished and Miorine’s thumb caresses her jaw, and Suletta knows what she really means by it all.

    -

    Two times Suletta hugs Miorine, one Miorine rejects, and finally, the one she gives.
