From what Louis had told him, Daniel had pictured Lestat as a Frenchman in his late-thirties, pug-faced, maybe a little balding, and permanently red in the face from the burst capillaries that come with too much drinking and smoking. The truth is a bit of a hard punch to his stomach, an uncomfortable tightness in his throat.
Daniel has worked too hard on his relationship with Louis to let some French asshole take his place.

Louis makes an effort not to be too flattered; reminds himself that he is being flirted with by a glorified algorithm dressed up in a pretty trick of light. The Duke is a lot of things, but he isn’t alive. Louis suspects that knowing this won’t make it any easier to kill him in the final act.
