“You know, Hecate,” Pippa murmurs, and suddenly they’re far too close again, “I don’t like being told I can’t do something. The Great Wizard says modern magic is out? I made it in. Tradition states that only witches may study magic? My school is co-ed.” She slinks an arm up over Hecate’s shoulder, mouth finding its way near her ear. “The potions mistress of the school with the second best potions mark says Pentangle’s is not welcome at the annual Spelling Bee?” Her lips are nearly against Hecate’s ear now, her breath hot, her body flush against Hecate’s own, “Then my school will win.”
She steps back and gives Hecate a look. “Even if it takes years of dodging the musty old rule book that you’re sure to throw at me for us to get there.”

Living in a squalid, impoverished orphanage, all Hecate and Pippa have are each other. They practice magic together in secret, and promise each other that someday they will have a better future.

Keen to do her bit for the war effort, Ada Cackle takes in an evacuated Mildred Hubble despite protests from her Deputy Head.
When Cackle's falls under attack, the school is forced to seek refuge within the walls of Nightstyx's Hall, a long abandoned school for witches with a shadowy past. But Hecate knows the secret of Nightstyx's, and holds a secret of her own about it's dark connection with the notorious (and notoriously missing) Pippa Pentangle.
But Pippa Pentangle is about to resurface.
And when she does, Hecate Hardbroom’s whole life will go to Hell.

“You are awake.”
“Yes.” Kathryn's reply was listless and a little further away than Seven would have liked. This drone has known horror, terror and regret. This drone does not wish those feelings for you. She leaned down, wrapping her arms and a portion of the sheet around Kathryn, and folded her in close against her own body heat. This drone can offer comfort. Support. Security. Seven let the silence that followed extend, wrapping that too into her embrace until she felt Kathryn returning to herself from that far away place she sometimes drifted to at night. Gradually, Kathryn spoke to her.
“I don't... I just-I can't...”
The broken quality of her speech made Seven want to bodily destroy what ever doubt was plaguing her. While a satisfying idea, it is ultimately futile. Conversation is more productive. When Kathryn didn't continue, just buried her face into the crook of Seven's elbow, Seven spoke instead.
