Summary

Simon Snow is an 11-year-old beginning his first year at the Watford School of Magicks. Simon is different from every other child attending—he is an orphan who only discovered he had magic a month ago and most unbelievably has been told that he is the prophesied Greatest Mage, the hero who will protect the World of Mages from the greatest threat to magic. However, Simon feels anything but great—he can’t make a single spell work on his own and is openly hated by his roommate. Thankfully, he is befriended by a plucky young mage who lives for adventure.

"So many of these paintings look so similar. Paintings of baby Jesus. Noblemen. Natural landscapes. They all blend together from one room to the next.
Until I see him.
I move a few steps closer, taking in the details. He’s posed as most subjects are in paintings like this, body angled slightly away, with a hand on his chest. Stupid fancy waistcoat and puffy lace cravat. Long dark locks of hair framing his face elegantly, with piercing grey eyes.
I marvel at how the artist was able to capture such a grey. Not the boring grey of wet cement, but a mysterious grey like the sea. Swirls of blues and greens mixing in such a way that, if you’re paying attention, you can make out the shades that you wouldn’t notice at first glance.
The most striking feature of all is the dragon wings that mark the back of his left hand.
I glance down at my own left hand, examining the mark that has been there since I was born. A pair of unfurled blood-red dragon wings.

I lean back against the wall of the milkshake parlour. I close my eyes. Deep breath in, deep breath out.

The whole world smells of blood and alcohol and burnt popcorn—
My eyes snap open. Simon is standing in front of me, arms crossed over his chest.
I stand up straighter, trying to look more put together than I feel. “Go back,” I tell him under my breath. “We’re surrounded by vampires.”
“You’re a vampire,” he mutters incredulously.

Simon finds Baz after his first meeting with Lamb. Still a little tipsy, Baz and Simon explore the Vegas strip and everything Sin City has to offer.
Wayward Son compliant until the moment Lamb leaves Baz after the milkshake parlor. This is a "what if" Baz and Simon didn't go directly back to the hotel after Baz's meeting with the vampires.

Bilbo has always struggled to tell the "true" story of what happened on his journey to the Lonely Mountain. Now, he's trying to retell his adventures as a bright happy children's book for his young nephew Frodo.
But is he telling the full truth? And are there things that he's leaving out?
(I'm taking the interpretation that Tolkien's 'translation; of the Red Book of Westmarch was only a translation of one of various copies made of the book throughout the centuries, and that I am 'translating' a different version of the text with the help of different primary sources! Which is why our descriptions of the events may differ.)
