Summary
Her mind traced back to him as she cut the line from the second suture. He hovered right behind her, observing her work; if she paused for moment and listened close, she could nearly hear the drum of his heart; the slow settling pace of his steady breathing.
Her own heart seemed to try and claw its way out of her chest. She suddenly had to focus just to be able to breathe.
And then a little prick — right through her blue, latex glove.
Shit.
There, a droplet of blood welled.
“Langdon,” was all that she said, and he was in action. She had all too clearly noticed the tremble in her own voice; the way in the flash of any moment of panic, his name rolled off of her tongue with ease.

Mel King is a responsible person.
She picks up her dry cleaning on time, waters her plants on schedule, and never lets a bag of spinach turn to slime in her fridge. She takes care of herself, her sister, and the people of Pittsburg. So, when it comes to advice, she always says the right thing:
"do not drunk text your ex", "do not rebound with a fling on Tinder", and "never, ever, date your coworkers".Mel King is a hypocrite.

Summary
Her hitched breath and a quiet sniff clue him into her state, even though he can no longer see her. Blindly he reaches a hand across the dash. He silently hates himself for loving her so deeply like this, hates that her empathy leads her here and hates how much it draws him to her.
“You once said that the ER needs sensitive people,” she states, fighting back that choked breath that comes with an onslaught of tears. “So do stray dogs, and cats, and—and squirrels that don’t know when to turn around in the middle of the road—”
“They do, Mel, but I need you. You don’t deserve this.”
Or: Mel's empathy is too all-encompasing for her own good. Frank is her steady hand.
