Dazai might as well be a hallucination, and Chuuya is merely leaning into the crisp vacancy of his penthouse, just the way it’s been for the past four years. Just the way he’s known it to be, memorized it to be, without the shitty mackerel trespassing. There are two of him, beige coat fluttering, as he moves and doesn’t let go of Chuuya’s writhing form. “Are you—the real—Dazai?”

Nothing about Dazai is worth saving, worth putting up with the pain and suffering that Chuuya has gone through over the years. Yet, Chuuya has stuck around. Never scared off, stubbornly rooted in place while storms rage through his blossoming leaves.
Or: Chuuya's love never ceases to surprise Dazai.

During Dazai's heat, Chuuya did everything. He took care of Dazai, fed him, forced him to take a bath and gave him blankets and pillows for a nest. Chuuya knew how to help. Dazai isn’t sure he can do that. He doesn’t have a caring bone in his body much less the ability to use those nonexistent caring bones to take care of someone in a mating cycle. Mating cycles are a lot. He doesn't understand them.
And with Chuuya being stronger than him, if the redhead ends up not being able to control himself, Dazai can’t do anything about it.
But maybe that’s okay… it’s only their subgender instincts right? If Chuuya forces himself on Dazai, Dazai can take it. He’s an omega. Aren’t they supposed to be made for that? Being able to satisfy alphas? Aren’t instincts supposed to know what’s best for them; even if Dazai highly disagrees with the urges his instincts have? Maybe if Dazai lets his instincts take control, he’ll be able to help Chuuya.
Or maybe Dazai really is a poor excuse of a human who can't even help his partner through a rut.
That seems more likely.

Chuuya marched towards the door, head bowed beneath the brim of his hat as he muttered to himself.

Looking back, Chuuya wouldn’t be able to say how it had happened. One second he was on his feet, swinging the door open with reckless abandon, and the next, he was on the floor with the wind knocked out of him.

Dazai realized that he’d been holding his breath— frozen with dread. He inhaled, shallow and wheezing, as he tried to regulate his breathing.
Where is this coming from? He’d been in plenty of critical situations before, and he was usually able to keep his cool.
And if he wasn’t, he was at least able to maintain his mask enough to make people think he was keeping his cool.
So why couldn’t he now?
