Summary
The party keep track of who’s died in the most dreams (other people’s). It starts off as a joke, but it kind of helps, in a weird, morbid kind of way.

Summary
Buck takes it to the grave.
He doesn’t mean to. It’s just—with all that time he spent teasing death, all the motorcycles and factory fires and blood-coated grenades—death gets impatient, in the end. Right as he’s starting to take life seriously. After he puts his name on the lease, buys life a ring, like, I’m in this for the long haul. Death gets jealous, and Buck falls through a second-story floor onto a derelict wrought-iron stair rail, and his femoral artery begins the quick but methodical work of leaking out the next fifty or sixty years of his life onto the charred tile floor.Bookmarked by Free

"Are you going for the course?" Lovegood asked. "You have the NEWTs.”
“What course?” Draco said, then, “No, don’t be ridiculous,” when he realized she meant the notice pinned up on the board he’d been staring at: Applicants To The Introductory Mediwizard Course For The Coming Term Shall Present Themselves In The Chief Mediwizard’s Office By August 24th.
“Oh, I thought you might,” she said. “Well, goodbye.” And off she wandered again in her addled way.

Summary
There's something to be said for those moments in-between missions, the ones where you manage to hold off on worrying about the tadpoles in your brain. The brief instances of levity in which you can afford to appreciate the beauty hidden in this strange, precarious new world you find yourself navigating.
The moments where rubies sparkle in a new light behind a curtain of long lashes, the mischievous, twinkling stars casting a blue glow glossing off silvery hair. Pretty things seem suddenly far too intent to watch your mouth run away from you, especially where a particular traveling companion who you just can't seem to stay away from is concerned.
Can you merely be Astarion's mirror in all this? Can your honeyed words break through his bitter smiles? Or have your compliments doomed you both from the moment they left your lips?

Summary
Buck slaps the back of his hand against Eddie’s chest. “I even carried Eddie here once.”
Eddie’s entire demeanor changes as he finds a way to get Buck to focus on him again. “That was the adrenaline.”
“Well, yeah,” Buck admits. “But I could do it now, too. Do you want me to prove it?”
That’s the flirtatious tone that was missing earlier, and Hen immediately pays closer attention. Eddie makes a sound that Hen has never heard him make, and it takes her a second to realize that it was a giggle. A giggle! If only she could record this shit for Chim and Karen.
“No,” he says, not very convincingly.
~
Hen spends three weeks watching Eddie make a fool of himself in front of Buck.

Summary
“You forgot this at my place,” he says, dropping a set of keys into Eddie’s hand. “Figured you’d need them to get home.”
“Oh,” Eddie says, looking down at his own hand for a second before aiming a grin up at Tommy, who’s got one or two inches on him. “Thanks.”
Tommy’s resulting grin fades into a wince when he glances over Eddie’s shoulder and catches the surprise on Chim’s face. “Sorry, is it, like, disrespectful to wear hats in here? Like in school?” He tugs the beanie off, and he’s got dirty blond curls that tumble loosely over his forehead.
Chim blinks, then blinks again, because with the hair Eddie's...friend almost looks like—No. He can’t look like Buck, actually, because that would be the funniest thing to ever happen in the history of humankind and Chimney would have to quit his job to dedicate the rest of his life to laughing about it.

“I’m not even in the neighborhood of mad,” he says, instead of vomiting any of the thousand feelings warring inside him. “But Buck. This would’ve—this took you hours.”
“I’m good at multitasking,” Buck says, and Eddie can practically hear him shrugging over the phone. “I did all the cooking after I put Chris to bed, and then I got up a little earlier to get the cleaning and laundry done. It was nothing.”
Eddie’s starting to suspect he’ll have to wait for Buck to come back to make him understand that, actually, it kind of was everything.

“What do you miss the most about Texas?”
The question takes Eddie by surprise; he and Buck have been staring at his TV screen in silence for the better part of an hour now. They just got off a 24-hour shift, and they’re both dead to the world, but Eddie had mentioned that Chris was sleeping over at a friend’s and he was dreading going home to an empty house, and Buck had followed him home, simple as that.
“Is it the food? I bet the barbecue’s amazing,” Buck muses, pulling a laugh out of Eddie.
“The barbecue is incredible,” Eddie confirms with a nod. “Honestly, though?”
Buck raises an eyebrow, humming to encourage Eddie to go on.
“The bluebonnets.”

“Hey,” Buck says, snagging an apple from the bowl on the counter as he passes by. “Hershey was the first affordable chocolate ever in the United States. And in World War II, they made specially formulated chocolate rations for soldiers. And for astronauts! Hershey bars have been to the moon.”
Maddie and Buck are from Chocolate Town, USA, and everyone thinks that's pretty funny.

“Uh, I think there’s been a mistake,” Buck says, looking at the producer. “Bobby’s from the 118 with me, not—what’d you say his name was?”
“Eddie Diaz, and it’s no mistake,” Samantha snaps. “You think it’s fun for our audience to watch people who know how to work together? Find your partner and get to your station.”
Buck opens his mouth, closes it again. “But Bobby—”
“Your station,” she repeats, sounding irritated, and Buck bites back the protest on his lips.

Summary
“Dad, Buck’s not gonna say he wants a party. He doesn’t think you want a fuss.”
Eddie is, apparently, a failure of a partner. “Buck—”
“He told Abuela,” Chris says, matter-of-factly. “I wasn’t meant to hear but they thought I was sleeping. He knows you don’t like big celebration things unless they’re inside but he wants a backyard party. He wants fireworks because he thinks they’re cool and he never got them when he was as old as me. He also never got cake like I do. That’s really sad, Dad.”
