People got lost here all the time. The place was a maze. Usually adults, looking to buy something illegal and ending up getting sold illegally instead. Kids were different. They cried and panicked. They, for sure, didn’t fight back.
And yet this one was.
He grabbed the kid and started walking, tugging him along without much thought. He didn’t know where he was going. Or why. He just knew he wanted to spend more time with him.
There was a tug in his chest. He felt… happy.

Varian's attention narrows down to the building they disappeared behind. Eugene is speaking to him, nudging Varian off the tailgate when he doesn’t jump off himself.
A person running away. Broken window, stolen med kit.
Varian vaguely registers Eugene’s noise of alarm as he bolts after them.
