Summary
HOW IT STARTED: The first thing Ilya noticed about Shane Hollander was his body. And not in a gay way, of course. It was just that he, as someone who worked out a lot, could always spot another person who worked out a lot.
HOW IT'S GOING: He didn’t know what was happening to him. Who the fuck he even was anymore. But Ilya was certain about one thing: He wanted Shane Hollander.
Ilya and Shane are roommates, co workers, gym bros, friends. Shane is gay. Ilya is straight – or, at least, he thought he was straight.
Until he met Shane Hollander.

Bookmarker's Notes
He was supposed to be straight, not wondering what it would be like to be in a relationship with a man. And Shane was his friend, he shouldn't be thinking about him as a potential lover or boyfriend.
But Shane made it hard not to want him.

Bookmarker's Notes
Shane found it hard, sometimes, to look at his body after what had happened. It had never failed him quite so egregiously before. The thing was, it was impossible to forget. Although logically it was the wrong time in their lives, he still felt as though he’d been cored like an apple, raw with pain and cold with grief. It had been so early. He scoured the internet: miscarriage happened in a third of pregnancies, and rates were higher for male bodies. How could something so normal be so devastating? His mom had had miscarriages, a lot of them, although he wasn’t sure exactly how many. It was probably the only thing she found quite as impossibly hard to talk about. She had told him when he was a teenager, when he’d asked offhand why he didn’t have any siblings, and then she’d been quiet and off for the rest of the day. He had never mentioned it again, although he’d thought of the ghosts of his brothers and sisters, floating away together somewhere, laughing and playing, while he was all by himself on earth.
He found himself reticent to have sex. The fact that he hadn’t told Ilya had made it all worse: it loomed between them, and Ilya didn’t even know there was anything there. He was afraid to get pregnant again, afraid to ask Ilya to use a condom in case he asked why. Shane couldn’t say “Please come on my face” every single time, and they were still supposed to be trying for a baby. He took tests religiously, almost every day. He needed to take out shares in them. He wasn’t going to be blindsided like that again. He couldn’t be. Ilya seemed to be puzzled, to eye him in a way that Shane couldn’t quite interpret. He was too tired to think about it hard, anyway.
“Oh my God. Are you okay? Is Ilya okay?”
“Ilya doesn’t know,” he found himself saying.
Her eyes widened. “What?”
“Rose, you don’t, you don’t get it.” The words began to flood out of him. “It’s been so fucking bad. I couldn’t tell him. He’s been drinking so fucking much, at least I think it’s a lot, it seems like a lot to me, and he was hiding it. He was going to AA meetings but he hardly ever goes now. We decided to have a baby but it was like, I don’t even know, I fucking said that mostly so he’d agree to go to meetings. And I didn’t even know I was pregnant, it was so early, and we’d just had the most shitty fight, he’d left and I didn’t know where he was. I couldn’t tell him. I don’t know how he’d react. I don’t trust him to not start getting fucked up about it. And part of me is like – Rose, this sounds so horrible…” It was like lancing a boil, talking to her like this, an agonising relief. “But it’s kind of a relief. We can’t bring a baby into this. I don’t even know right now if I ever want to do it at all. I don’t even know who he is now, sometimes. He looks at me, and I’m like, who the fuck are you, do I even like you—”

Shane smiled, soft and bright and endlessly fond. “You want to get out of here?”
He thought of the hotel room. Of essentially shared suitcases, his stuff always ending up mixed in with Shanes. He thought of sex, yes, but then he thought about brushing their teeth together, and Shane’s head on his chest while they caught their breath, the way Shane tended to trace lazy patterns in his skin just before they fell asleep. He thought of the plane ride the next day, when Shane would be horrifically hungover and Ilya wouldn’t be because he never was, and Shane would threaten to divorce him until Ilya scrounged up coffee and a greasy breakfast sandwich and all was forgiven. He thought about the plane ride, where he’d put on some crap movie and Shane would share his headphones and would still, somehow, fall asleep on Ilya’s shoulder halfway through, explosions be damned.
He thought about the future. He thought about every day for the rest of his life.
“Yes,” he said, pressing a kiss into Shane’s cheek. “Let’s get out of here.”

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
Right???

Bookmarker's Notes
When Shane got home that afternoon the coffee cups and grilled cheese pan had been washed and put away and when he went upstairs the bed was made with fresh sheets and every single pillow lined up at the top, as straight as soldiers. Last night’s sheets he found in the washing machine, its cycle already completed. Rozanov had clearly poked around the apartment to find both the linen closet and the laundry room. Before Shane could fully work out what he thought or felt about any of this, his phone buzzed with a text.
It was a picture of the apartment key, hanging from a Boston Raiders keychain. Shane snorted.
Asshole, he texted back.
Rozanov replied seconds later with a kissy-face emoji and at that Shane had to laugh.
