When people turned 16, they gained an ability and lost something in return for that. There was no way to determine what would happen to you. For most of the population, the losses and gains were minor, so the most exciting part was finding out what had occurred. Regulus had woken up on his 16th birthday relatively excited. Almost immediately, he had known what he had gained. When he discovered his loss, he promptly burst into silent tears. He was mute; he could not speak or make any sounds. In his opinion, it was not worth the gain of being able to read people’s minds.
