Wymack’s voice trails off, words stuttering to an abrupt stop. All heads turn, slowly following the path of Wymack’s gaze.
Andrew spots him almost immediately - hair as black as night, curls gentle and full atop his head. He’s got a bruise the size of a baseball around his eye, freckles spattered out around it like an explosion of stardust. His eyes are the colour of the sky, cresting with storm clouds.
His hands are in his pockets as he walks by, fisted around something. He doesn’t look at any of them as he passes, eyes downcast.
Andrew’s never seen him before.
“What the hell happened to your face, Neil?” Wymack shouts, voice startling in the aftermath of silence. Neil doesn’t stop, plundering by the team and their coach without a second-glance.

With impeccable timing, a tea-kettle sound keens from the kitchen, followed by a contained bang.

Wei Wuxian had a lot more leeway than most teachers, showing his class how to transcribe Black Pink for traditional instruments, and letting them use his practice room as a space to goof off. He'd rolled his eyes at "Memories of Our Past" as the Winter Recital theme, but supposed it was to be expected, and then set about helping the kids find clever ways to interpret it. As it was, they still had four girls submit oration of the Ballad of the Yiling Patriarch, who had to be coerced into performing it together, and then had a fight over who would get to speak the final quarter, when the Yiling Patriarch and the poet finally declare their feelings for one another.
"It's about the longing," Wei Wuxian had told three pouting girls. "The ending is good, because of all the sadness beforehand. Each part is important."
Wei Ying and Lan Zhan haven't seen each other in years. The students have a plan.

The people who followed him? More like that single person. His chest fills with warmth as he thinks abruptly of bunny130809 and his bunny icon and his earnest, awkward, achingly sweet words.
“Well, anyway,” Wei Ying says, eager to move on from the subject. It’s making him dizzy, the way Lan Zhan’s voice keeps bleeding into his old follower’s typed words. He’s probably just projecting, and that must say something about him, right? Had there been only two persons in all this time who’d been patient enough to really listen to him, for them to mesh together so seamlessly in his head?

It's common knowledge in the Heavens that gods are not supposed to interact with humans outside of answering prayers, and they're definitely not supposed to show up in person and talk to a child. But Xie Lian isn't afraid of breaking rules that he's already broken, so he does it anyway. In fact, he takes it one step further and brings the child home.
Basically, Wei Wuxian's parents died in a night hunt when he was five, but he ends up being adopted a year later by a god and his ghost king husband, so it's not all bad.... In fact, it's probably better than it should be.
