Summary
A firework was an explosion, and a carefully timed one at that. Gunpowder caught with a flash, gases shoving down from the flame with a shockwave that sent the colourful paper-plastic rocket soaring high into the sky, a manmade imitation of a star that burned twice as bright. A second spark sent it burning outwards, the fiery trail giving way to a spring dandelion of colour and light. Strontium red, Barium green, Copper blue. Objectively, something beautiful.
Objectivity, however, has little sway in the realm of perception.

“I asked what happened, when you came back,” Martin said, suppressing as best he could the panic-stricken, deeply unhelpful horror threatening to claw its way up his throat. “You were alright, you said you were alright.”
Jon smiled flatly and stared at his hands, clasped in his lap.
“You didn’t ask what happened. You asked if they hurt me.” He took in a shuddering breath. “They did not. In the service of preserving my precious skin.”

We’re in Scotland. Me and Jon. We’ve been here… oh, a bit more than a week. Hiding out. But honestly, it feels more like a vacation. Not an extravagant one but… It’s been… really nice.

Jon and Martin are helping each other to not succumb to the influence of the Eye and the Lonely, while trying to navigate their relationship, and who they are to each other after everything that's happened.
