As the moon rises above the treeline, Taako smells the distinctive scent of big magic—ozone, hanging thick in the air. The bird unfurls its wings, growing larger and shifting before Taako’s eyes until it's no longer a bird at all, but the most handsome man Taako’s ever seen.
He’s dark-skinned, with long dreadlocks that tumble down over his shoulders, dressed in a fine suit that’s years out of date, but perfectly preserved. His cheekbones are high and his gaze is sharp. He studies Taako and Magnus from the other side of the thorn bush, and tilts his head, considering them. “You’re a long way from home,” the man says. “Didn't anyone warn you about the dangers lurking in the Felicity Wilds after the sun goes down?”

Summary
Barry had four rules for himself, to keep himself on track and focused on saving the world. No matter how much he wanted to, he couldn't break them, or he risked bringing about the end of everything.
Rule one: He could not lose control.
Rule two: He could not give up in his search for Lup.
Rule three: He could not let Lucretia go through with her plan.
And finally, probably the hardest one to keep by far,Rule four: He could not see his family.
Attacking a cooking show assistant in the back of a small caravan, Barry blows his last rule out of the goddamn water. And then he keeps breaking it. It might just be worth it though. Even without his memories, Barry could use Taako's help now more than ever.

Barry felt it first. During a particularly challenging year, Lup caught him crying, and she softly and sincerely consoled him. And just for a moment, the professional wall between them came down, and something shone through.
Barry has always dealt with feeling "off" or "bad" for "no good reason" on his own. Lup reminds him that he's not as alone as he thinks he needs to be.

“Entertainment!” Someone shouted from the crowd. One by one, more and more voices demanded some form of entertainment. And the caravan members did their best, though there wasn’t much beyond well-worn ballads or sonnets. There followed much shouting and booing. For a while it appeared that the entertainment would come more from the hecklers than the actual performers. Davenport felt like this experience had put a damper on his peaceful evening, and he nearly resigned himself to tuck in early.
Finally someone shouted, “All right, enough of this dribble. We got respectable people in our midst. Don’t want them to think we’re a bunch of back-valley goobers. Taako! Lup! Give em a show!”

Taako and Lup have devised a plan to get back at their shitty family for the way they had treated them as children, as well as put an end to the incoming letters now that the twins have gained a little bit of notoriety. They're going to go back home for Candlenights, and it's going to be the worst Candlenights anyone there has ever had.
Lup's bringing Barry, because nothing's better than showing up with a respectable looking dude only for said dude to start pulling out the formaldehyde pig brains. Taako needs something like that too.
So, why not ask the cute guy in his drama class who does bad accents when he gets nervous if he's free over break?

Taako wasn't supposed to give a shit. He was the one who could push for the hard choice in their group, who could turn away from a world and let it crumble to dust behind them. He'd done it twenty one times now, doing it once more shouldn't be an issue.
This was all the beach year's fault. That damn ocean had worn away the sharp edges he'd had in place to protect himself from shit like this, and he hadn't been able to build them back up in time. He'd never admit it, but kids had always been a particular soft spot for him.
And Angus was a brat, but fuck, just this once Taako didn't want to leave it all to dust in his wake.

When Kravitz was in 6th grade his school set up a pen pal program, matching them with students who spoke Elvish. It was a simple program, they would write their pen pals letters in elvish as practice, and their pen pals would write them back in common. None of the pairings had lasted until the next year when it wasn't a requirement anymore.
None, except for his and Barry's. They'd been matched up with siblings, a pair of twins.
That had been ten years ago, and Taako and Lup had never stopped writing them. Him and Barry had never stopped responding. He could say with certainty that Taako and Lup were their best friends. So when they mention possibly getting kicked out of their family's home again it's not hard to throw out an invite for the two to come visit some time, if they ever need a place to stay.
Kravitz just wasn't expecting a knock on his door as soon as he put the letter in the mailbox.
