Summary
Dustin Henderson had spent the last eight years searching for something. What exactly, he didn’t quite know. And even if he did, he would never admit it to anyone, much less himself. In theory, he had everything he ever dreamed and imagined. He graduated valedictorian back in 1989, got his PhD from Duke in Astrophysics, moved to Colorado to work on a brand new satellite for a company he loved, and he and his best friend Steve still took annual trips every summer. What more could he possibly want? One holiday trip to Hawkins, Indiana, in December 1997 may lead him one step closer to what he’s looking for… well, that and a one-way ticket to Iceland.

“How would you respond?” Mike asked, shoving his notebook towards him that only had the words Dear El scribbled at the top. “If you were me?”
“I’m not you, Mike,” he scoffed. “She’s your girlfriend-“
“Yeah, I know, but just pretend. How would you write back if you were me?” Mike held out his pencil towards him.
Dustin hesitated. He couldn’t let himself do that, pretend that he was El’s boyfriend. Since Suzie it was a rabbit hole he really couldn’t let himself get lost down. But what was the other option? Have El get a shitty letter from Mike that he didn’t put any effort into? She deserved better than that.
So he sighed and put pen to paper.
