Summary
I’ve been working on some version of this poem for nearly five years now, so there are more drafts of it than I can count. It feels like it might finally be time to share one.
This piece is inspired by one of my favorite vignettes, A Case of You, by ChekhovsRazor—one of my favorite writers in the Hannibal fandom. GO READ IT NOW! I’ve probably revisited it several times a year since it was first published in 2020. Their story, in turn, was inspired by an artwork by nephila_clavipes, an artist I used to follow on both Twitter and Tumblr before their accounts disappeared. As far as I know, their Redbubble still exists—and luckily, so does their work in my space, in the form of stickers, postcards, and art prints. I’ll always remember them as effortlessly cool, and I still miss the way they used to take on the “antis” of Hannibal Twitter with such precision a few years back.
But I digress.

Summary
There’s a bit of canon divergence here. I’ve always found it hard to believe that, with all their hookups, Shane and Ilya never ended up spending an entire night together, even accidentally, so I decided to explore that possibility. At its core, this story focuses on Shane beginning to notice the cracks in Ilya’s carefully constructed facade, while also forcing him to confront the fractures in his own.
"The first time we spent the night together, it was by mistake, the kind that only happens when you’re too exhausted to make deliberate choices. It was late in the season, when everything narrows to a single point, games stacking on top of each other, travel blurring the spaces in between, your body existing in a constant state of impact and recovery."

He laughs immediately, which is part of the problem. Hudson laughs like a man who enjoys the shape of words more than their meaning.
But the analogy stays in my throat afterward.
