Mike was well aware that anyone else would have been more likely to say Will looked terrifying. But he could never be terrifying to Mike. He was Will - still Mike’s best friend, with one of the biggest hearts Mike had ever known. With one of the most courageous hearts Mike had ever known.
The difference was in Mike.

“No!” Mike waved his flashlight around, nearly blinding Will multiple times, “I wanna know why Suzie broke up with you.”
“For the last time! She didn’t!” Now Will couldn’t see Dustin’s face, but the drooping of his shoulders let him know that Dustin was either about to metaphorically run away from the conversation or just strangle Mike. He hoped he chose the former over the latter, Will loved Mike, even though he was being a little shithead.
“I don’t get it! You’re a great catch. If her parents can’t see that then screw them!” Will swiftly redirected the flashlight that Mike waved around, away from his face. Mike liked to talk with his hands, it was cute when there wasn’t anything in them to brain someone with.

After graduation Will is dragged back into the upside down, and someone unexpectedly brave is pulled in with him.

Summary
He needed this. He'd needed it for years. the solid warmth of Will's body pressed against his own, the way his fingers instinctively curled into Will's robes like it was the only anchor in the storm that was his mind. His stupid brain had always stopped him before, finding excuses about boundaries and shit. But here, wrapped in Will's arms with the morning light filtering through the trees, he couldn't remember why any of that had ever mattered.
In classic multiversal-swap fashion, Mike Wheeler and Mike the Brave have swapped places. Mike learns a lot about himself and is forced to stop hiding behind excuses.

The Paladin fell silent for a moment. “But tell me one thing. How is it possible that in this world, young Michael is not in love with you? I assumed we would be soulmates in every realm.”
That question was a sharp knife to Will’s heart. How could he possibly know? It wasn’t something he could control or change. Of course, there were times when Will had held some hope for reciprocity, but eventually, all his dreams had simply fallen apart. Mike had a girlfriend. Mike wasn’t a mistake like him.
“I don’t know…” Will whispered.
“Maybe his heart is sleeping,” the Paladin said. “You must wake him with your touch. Take his hand and speak with your heart.”
The one where Will accidentally summons a Paladin version of Mike, and learns that true soulmates can speak through the touch of their hands.
