“Caitlyn,” she says. That isn’t right. That wasn’t the answer Vi was after. Names are easily given away but so seldomly remembered in Stillwater, but it echoes in Vi’s head. She almost doesn’t hear the actual answer. “And though I have no doubt a thousand people have given this answer before, I did nothing. I was doing my job, and then I was here. No trial. No sentencing. No crime to speak of.”

‘I promise you, Vi: she’s the real deal.’
Vi rocks back in her chair, folding her arms and pursing her lips. Her gut is normally trustworthy, and her gut is yelling at her to run the fuck away from this one.
But the tour is only days away. Tickets aren't selling, and from what she can see on social media it's because people are worried they're just going to cancel from the lack of a bass guitarist. Her options have been dwindling rapidly, and the only one she has left now is on her producer's desk, peering up at her from glossy stock paper, looking as unimpressed by the situation as Vi feels.
She rocks forwards again, staring hard at the image. This woman — this Caitlyn — is holding the guitar comfortably between her hands, her fingers are positioned correctly along its strings, and Vi supposes that perhaps it's not all carefully-styled bluster.
This is gonna be nothing but trouble, she thinks bitterly.
