Summary
Vash is practically listless in the sidecar by the time Wolfwood pulls up in front of an inn. Wolfwood’s eyes narrow as he sizes up his companion, lips puckering, but Vash doesn’t even stir. Nor does he stir when Wolfwood disappears into the building to book them a room, or even when Wolfwood gets back, still in the exact same position as he was before as Wolfwood walks up to him.
Brow creasing, Wolfwood reaches for his shoulder to shake him awake, but the moment Wolfwood’s fingers graze Vash’s neck—
“Shit,” Wolfwood hisses, yanking his hand back. “Tongari, you’re burning up.”
Vash barely reacts to the information, his eyelids fluttering. He gives a faint groan by way of response, after a moment, and Wolfwood lets out another curse. He had to have been feeling this all long; that he’s so out of it can only mean that it’s gotten so bad that he can no longer hide it. Fucking moron. And what is there for Wolfwood to do about it now?
---
Vash comes down with a bug just weeks out from their final destination.

Summary
“Do now,” Wolfwood laughs. “Did always. When you don’t get enough water. Like any other plant.” His lip curls with amusement, and he leans in closer. Vash can’t help but stretch his eyes open as far as they’ll go, greedy for the way Wolfwood’s irises sparkle. He’s so pretty. Vash’s tongue is so heavy, or he’d say as much too. “But you’re probably right. Ain’t used to be that easy for you. But you’re just as vulnerable as any human without most of your powers.”
Used to be… without most of… Vash’s gaze flickers up towards the bits of hair that fall into his eyes. Charcoal black and coarser than it used to be, all flattened and soggy, probably with sweat. Just like Rem’s—or Wolfwood’s—and Vash looks back at the man leaning over him and feels that terrible, painful twinge in his chest a second time over.
Why? Vash’s hand scrabbles against his throat, to clear his airway, and then when that doesn’t work, falls to the chain around his neck. The familiar weight of a hand-carved cross, the one he corpse robbed from the love of his life—right.

A fever pitches Vash into the past, where there are ghosts waiting to greet him.

Summary
As easy as it usually is to read Vash, he’s not typically very keen on explaining himself. Wolfwood asks no less than five times between waking up and leaving the hotel what’s got such a pep in Vash’s step, but he only starts to understand as they enter the diner, greeted by pink and red balloons, romantic jazz on the radio, and a fake flower on every table.
Wolfwood groans. “Really? You’re this excited over Valentine’s Day?”
“What did you expect?” Vash retorts—and really, what did Wolfwood expect? “It’s a holiday all about love! Of course I like it. Morning, Marie!”
---
Even Vash's favourite holiday is capable of going terribly wrong.

Summary
He closes his eyes on the next drag. The cigarette is helping, but Wolfwood still feels—not nervous, exactly, but restless. There’s an itch in his veins, a tug, like he needs to get up and do something, but he just isn’t sure what. If Vash wanted company, he would’ve asked for it, right? He clearly needs to be alone right now, or he wouldn’t have retreated so quickly.
On the other hand, Wolfwood can’t actually remember the last time Vash asked for something he needed. He’ll hide an injury before he’ll expect Wolfwood to tend to it for him, the obstinate ass. Wolfwood bites down on his cigarette in frustration, then stubs it against the nightstand. Maybe he should do something, but the idea of barging in there while Vash is taking time for himself gives him a headache.
Wolfwood gets to his feet and glances at the door. “Blondie, you dead in there?”
There’s a telling pause, and then Vash responds in an unnaturally even voice: “No, I’m not. Sorry, do you need to use it?”
“No.” Wolfwood rolls his eyes. “Just lettin’ you know I’ll be right back.”

Wolfwood tries to help Vash cope with his guilt after a fight goes south.
