Those words weren't real.
Surely.
But the girl who spoke them was looking his way, shooting him that same lopsided smile she tossed at the lead guitarist, and Zanka studied Rudo’s reactions with a hope in his eyes he hadn’t noticed before.
They were looking at him like Riyo’s offer was real, like Zanka’s dreams had a goal. Like Rudo might have a place to belong.
"You don't have to," Riyo said, casually. She was far too mellow like this: hand across the strings of her bass, gaze dim in the garage she called home. "All our songs are trash, but we could really use a drummer."

Summary
That steady beat, playing from a Bluetooth JBL speaker, was far too familiar. Zanka heard it all the time, playing down the hall of his university dorm. He swallowed the dread it brought and pushed the door open, leaving his key inside the lock.
His roommate was there, unpacking his own luggage, invasive as a nightmare. He turned at the sound of the door creaking open, his wide, magenta eyes gaping with such confusion that Zanka wondered if it was real. Jabber never got confused. He knew everything—magically, gallingly. It was one of the things Zanka hated about him. It was one of the things Zanka hated about himself.
"Mr. Bad Attitude," Jabber scoffed. "I just can't get away from you, can I?"
In which Zanka, lead guitarist of his rock band Akuta, is forced to room with up-and-coming rapper Jabber during an exclusive music retreat.

It was wishful thinking, certainly. Temi should be asleep. The full moon hung halfway across the sky; dawn lingered like waiting wishes. Rami should find a space to camp in Woolhaven, somewhere warm and discreet, so their sudden appearance wouldn't startle anyone.
But hoofsteps sounded on the wooden floors.
Rami froze. They readjusted their mask, their clothes, their empty backpack. The sound of paper slid and rose. Wind paused like ancient promises.
"… Rami?"
How long has it been since they heard her say their name?

Stuck deep underground, who knows where, without even being able to find out which time it was or have a proper source of light. Zanka was having the worst day of his life, it seemed.
“But wait, it gets even worse,” his life probably thought with sick glee right before Zanka caught a sight of– something glowing in the distance. He squinted to see it better.“Enjoyed your nap?” Jabber's voice reached him just as his face gained features in the dark.

OR, Zanka gets trapped deep underground after a mission gone wrong. His only company is Jabber, who he would rather not see in a million years, who is the reason for the entire mess, who... acts confusing? -

Summary
Zanka liked to believe that he was always perfectly composed. He wore a polished mask over his face, never let his guard down, and even when he was fucking Jabber into the mattress in some dingy safehouse, those ridiculous eyebrows of his were still tense with focus.
Jabber wanted to see it slip.

“you’re acting off,” he says, blunt, because he doesn’t care about being careful with him. he’s long past that point of caring.
jabber huffs a quiet laugh, “what, you worried about me?” he asks, and there’s the edge again, but it’s thinner than usual, like it’s covering something instead of being the whole point.
“don’t be stupid.” zanka snaps back without hesitation. but the words feel heavier than they should, like they land somewhere they weren’t meant to. jabber’s gaze flickers, just briefly, down to where zanka’s assistaff is holding him, then back up again.
