    Summary

For what felt like ages, war had been raging in the world. War between two of the most powerful beings out there – dragons, and nephilim. A war of survival on one side, and a war of pure genocide on the other.

It wasn’t the first war dragonkind had been forced into. In almost five hundred years of life, Magnus had been through multiple wars. But they never got any easier. He’d watched and fought and bled for his people as, time and time again, the world seemed intent on trying to stamp them from existence. He’d seen as humans revered them, and as they feared them.

And he’d borne witness to this new war that wasn’t really new at all. The only difference between this one and all the others was that this time, the people who sought to take out the dragons actually had the power to stand up against them.

The war had left them all a little broken and a little lost, each in their own way. How could they be anything but in times like these?

But sometimes - sometimes it takes being broken to truly figure out how we come together. And Magnus had always been a firm believer that no one was too broken to be saved.

    Summary

Things weren’t supposed to end like this.

That was the thought Alec couldn’t quite banish. It clung to him as he was dragged out of his own Institute with the cuffs around his wrists and his people watching on with looks that ranged from shock to horror, with a few here and there of glee. It repeated over and over in Alec’s mind through the night he spent in the Silent City with nothing but the dark and his memories to cling to.

And it was the thought he had now as he stared at Imogen Herondale and the Silent Brother who held the deruning device so calmly in his hands.

Faced with the end of his life and everything he'd ever been a part of, everything he'd ever known, Alec finds that maybe things aren't as over as he thought. They won't be the same, not ever again, but maybe with the help of someone he'd convinced himself he could never have, he can take what was done to him and make it into something even better. Something that, for the first time in his life, he can be proud of.

    Summary

For a long time, Alec had felt like his life was held together by strings tied on him by the Clave, his parents, his siblings. Strings that pulled and tugged him in every which direction, heedless of the bruises and blood left behind. As much as they hurt, some days they’d been the only thing to hold him together.

That is, up until the moment Alec stood on the shores of Lake Lyn and faced the death of the one person who held a piece of his soul, and the lies that followed his mysterious resurrection.

There, on the shores of Lake Lyn, those strings finally pulled too hard, and Alec broke.

With the permission of the Inquisitor, and the help of the warlock who Alec had wanted so desperately to allow himself to fall for (and had been terrified to do more than smile at his flirting) Alec walked away from everything and everyone. He left New York behind and made himself a home in the small town of Prayer – a joke Magnus found particularly funny.

But, two years after that fateful night, Alec’s old life comes knocking, and those strings he thought he’d finally cut are tugging him home. Back to the place he never wanted to have to see again.

At least this time, he’s not facing it alone.

    Summary

The sensation of blood-soaked metallic dirt beneath his cheek is insubstantial and fleeting, overlaid and then replaced with the smooth slide of cheap cotton and Alec jerks back into being entangled in the rough weave of Institute-standard sheets, agony shrieking down his side.

In which the world burns the first time and Alec and Magnus break reality (to burn it down again the right way).

    Summary

There’s a deep weariness in Alec’s eyes when he finally looks up to meet Catarina’s gaze. Magnus, on the other hand, turns away to glare at the wall behind Alec’s head, the line of the warlock’s shoulders as razor-sharp as the war paint masquerading as eyeliner on his face.

Alec takes a deep inhale, pushing back the hurt and tilting his chin up ever so slightly in quiet resignation as he breathes out slowly.

“In order for true love’s kiss to break the curse,” and here Alec’s voice is carefully even against the incipient tightening of his throat, “is the love required to be mutual?”
