Summary
When Stede Bonnet left a life on land to sail the seas as The Gentleman Pirate, he thought he would figure out his true calling. He never expected that rescuing a strange, gray-bearded mercreature covered in tattoos and healing scars would be the thing to give him direction. In discovering who the merman is, he discovers parts of himself he'd kept hidden, and that maybe their lives really aren't so different, after all. They're both looking for the same thing: a person to see past all the trauma and who truly sees them. Ed is like something from Stede's wildest dreams, and Stede is willing to risk breaking the rules society has put on both of them in order to find a new place for them, all while they define what their relationship looks like.
And if he can figure that all out, maybe Stede isn't such a bad pirate after all.

Ed's teaching a cocktail class, thinking about the one Stede attended. But Stede's long gone, and Ed doesn't know why.
And then, a knock at the door.
He can’t say why it happened but it sure had happened. They were there, after Stede finished for the day. Normal. It was pouring rain and the bar was empty. Regular. Ed closed early, because that’s a fucking perk of owning the place. Standard. They’d killed the music in favor of the rain pounding at the skylights and played cribbage at the bar.
All of it an average Tuesday night.
Except that Stede had been pouting about losing, listing the points in his crib with stubborn slowness, like if he stalled enough some more fifteens would materialize. Ed was tired of falling in love because he’d momentarily forgotten that it’s not the fall that kills you—it’s the ground.
So he’d kissed him. A small soft thing, the nervous thrum of Ed’s heartbeat making his head spin and his balance on the stool precarious.
“Sore loser,” Ed had said into the space between their smiles, and then started shuffling cards with a wink.

His 6-month stay is running out and, well, turns out a fake marriage is an option to stay, because tropes are fun. Ed's got his own shit going on, you'll find out more in later chapters, but he thinks a sham marriage to this weird guy is probably going to at least be a bit of a laugh. Will update weekly.

Wee John made a decision a long time ago to savor any joy he could snatch out of a life that so many people had warned him would be joyless. He knows the world is a harsh place. He’s had those lessons, and he learned them well. Joy, beauty, love, pleasure, friendship, curiosity - these have shown him that his continued existence is a triumph, and he makes a point to notice them when they happen.
The cool thing is that the rest of the crew seem to have come to the same conclusion, and help each other notice. So if he tells them, they’ll take it seriously. They will know what it means.
“You know,” John says abruptly as Stede and Blackbeard set the last of the Spanish galleon’s haul on the deck of the Revenge, “I’ve had a truly excellent day so far.”
