Yeah, maybe John doesn’t look like Steve. But from behind, when he sits pressed against Bob, the scene looks a little too familiar. Familiar enough that Bucky needs to blink repeatedly and get up to go to his room before it gets too much.
They aren’t him and Steve. They simply aren’t. Yet Bucky feels his stomach churn.
Maybe it’s the fact that Bucky understands Bob— that he understands what it feels like to be turned into a weapon against your will, only to be valued if you obey the orders. Maybe it’s simply that he still isn’t over how familiar John looks when he stands under the right lighting. But at that moment, he decides to pay attention, even if from afar, to make sure Bob doesn’t get hurt, to make sure that he doesn’t get left behind after trusting too much.
