Tally unraveled her scourge and held it with a slight uncertainty in her hands. Alder narrowed her eyes just as Tally brought her hands up in a fighting stance.
If they needed to let out their frustrations this way in order for a productive conversation to occur, then so be it.

The entirety of the world has shrunken down to this clearing, this moment, the feeling of Sarah Alder before her, gloriously alive and burning with vitality. She’s a candle flame in darkness, star-bright lightning splintering through gray skies. A storm caught and shaped by divine hands into beautiful, mortal form.
When at last she speaks, the voice is entirely her own, untouched by the Mother or the telltale flavor of Her commands. It’s Sarah the woman who answers Tally, not General Alder the soldier or the Mother’s faithful sword.
Tally isn’t quite sure how she knows the difference, only that she does.
