This was a "what if" I did on reddit when someone posed the question of "If Glorfindel accompanied the Fellowship, as was considered at the Council of Elrond, would Gandalf have let him help fight the Balrog?". This question led to the comment "Imagine Glorfindel walking into the Halls of Mandos and Námo looks at him saying 'Lemme guess...Balrog?'". Which led to...this!

Summary
Tauriel's official story is that her parents were killed by orcs. She is a lowly Silvan elf and nothing more. Except that isn't true. None of it is. In an effort to protect the only survivor of a terrible kinslaying in his kingdom, Thranduil and Legolas craft a plan to shelter the tiny elleth. After all, if you tell a lie so many times, even you may start to think it's true...
Takes place early on in Tauriel's life. This is the first of a series of stories on Tauriel's unusual upbringing as a ward in Thranduil's palace.
