She looks up at him. His face is too soft, too open. Ready for her to reject him, call him one of the ugly names people reserve for alphas, to remind them of their place as primitive remnants of an old system that most people have evolved past, outcasts who have to be controlled. He’s already wounded without her having to wield the blade.
“Please,” he says and reaches out a hand. She gasps and flinches away, though he was nowhere near touching her. “Please. I’m not—I wouldn’t. Don’t run. I promise—I would never hurt anyone.”
A lonely young woman arrives at the cottage she inherited from her grandfather on a remote lake in northern Ontario, to find her neighbour is a rare Alpha, a relic of the old days when humans were ruled by their designation. Across a long hot summer, they connect over their shared history, and she finds that the past may not be as far away as she assumed. -

Everyone knew Ben and Armie were soulmates, ever since Armie moved to Ben’s hometown when they were both ten.
On the first day of fifth grade, a group gathered to proudly display their soulmate marks to the new kid, a sea of names on small arms. Armie’s eyes were inexorably drawn to the Armitage clearly marked on the forearm of a gangly dark-haired boy with huge ears. His heart stopped. Frozen in dread, he held his marked arm behind his back until the pressure of the group forced him to shakily show it to the eager circle, revealing the curly-scripted Ben on the inside of his wrist.
The boy’s face lit up, wide mouth stretching into a grin, and Armie was trapped.

It's of Hux in the weak, nascent sunlight, red and gold and pink and filtered through the dappled bridge of the trees over their heads, when they'd been standing by the edge of the marsh, and Ben had bitten a bruise into the underside of his jaw maybe fifteen minutes earlier, and when you squinted you could see it, nestled against the fold of his black collar, because Hux had his head tilted in just the right way.
