  Summary

  "I'll see you later then," Ruby says, releasing his hand. She involuntarily flexes her fingers as she drops her arm by her side.

  James follows the movement.

  "Have dinner with me tonight," he says, glancing back at her. "There's an old pub in Pemwick where the boys and I go sometimes for a drink or two." Ruby raises one eyebrow and James smirks. "Or maybe more than two. But the food is great and it's never too busy. I have something to do after school, but Percy can pick you up at 7.30?"

  Ruby hesitates only a beat. “It's a date."

  "You came," he says, and he can hear the surprise mixing with relief in his own voice.

  "I was thinking…" she starts and James nods, intrigued and a bit amused because when is Ruby Bell not thinking? She pauses, eyes still fixed on him, and James knows that whatever she says next will decide where they go from here.

  "I think the past is... overrated.”

  Something in James settles at her words.

  So this is it. He won’t have to pretend he doesn't know her, won’t have to pretend that whatever this is, this charged tension between them, doesn't intrigue him.

  Summary

  Alistair meant what he said to James. He wanted to sit at the far back of the large room and sleep off his hangover, maybe even try and forget his heartbreak at the memory of Kesh smiling while he flirted with Camille the night before. That was the plan anyway. But then James decided this was the day he had to go and be an asshole and make it everyone's problem.

  So here Alistair was trying to mind his own business, and James had to go and poke the bear.
