Paddy fiddles with the signet ring he usually wears on his left hand. Eoin rarely sees him take it off, only when he’s boxing and he puts it on a chain around his neck, or on the odd occasion he’s doing maintenance on his car or Eoin’s bike. Now, he holds it carefully in both hands, looking down at the ring with the same thoughtful expression with which he had been considering the lake in front of them.
“Are you proposing to me?” Eoin interrupts, unable to keep quiet any longer.
Paddy looks up, his expression landing somewhere between bewilderment and nausea.
