The shitty part is: Steve doesn’t even like Eddie, not really, not like that. He’s a great friend, sure, Steve admires him – admires his courage, admires that he knows who he is and isn't afraid of it, thinks he’s hot as hell. But he doesn’t want to date him, doesn’t want anything more than what they’re doing already except for Eddie to maybe look him in the eyes the next morning. It’d be the perfect arrangement if it weren’t for this whole morning after song-and-dance; they’re friends, they make a great team, and fooling around takes the edge off the panic and adrenaline of – doing what they do for a hobby. It’s just Steve that gets all torn up over it.

Summary
The year that Wulf turns fifteen, spring comes rolling down the mountain like an avalanche, slowly, and then all at once. The winter snows melt into slush and the slush melts into puddles; the wildflowers start to bloom, in vast colourful swarths along the main road, and, most importantly, the sheep need shearing again.
Wulf’s father hires a handful of boys from the village to help out with the work; Bren is one of them, and he comes hiking down the mountain with a satchel stuffed full of books to sleep in the barn with the other boys.
“What,” Wulf says, when he sees, “did you decide you would shear the sheep naked with a book in one hand, Bren?”
“No,” Bren says, smiling, “Although I know how much you would like that. No, Wulfie, I have a plan. We are studying this spring.”
“Studying,” Wulf repeats, twisting the word around in his mouth; Bren still goes down to the schoolhouse three times a week, but Wulf hasn’t been in years. “Why are we studying, exactly?”
Bren smiles, bright in the dappled barn light. “Because, my friend,” he says, “in the autumn, we are going to the Soltryce Academy.”

Summary
Kie teaches guitar to disadvantaged kids, these days, and organises beach clean-ups on her days off. JJ does just about any odd job someone’ll pay him for. They live in a one-bedroom shack right on the beach with windchimes strung up all around so Kie can always hear which way the wind’s blowing. It’s Kie’s dream life.
She can’t quite crack why she’s so unhappy.

Summary
Even though they’re assigned to the same berth and Hickey sleeps beside him each night, they hardly look at each other, hardly even acknowledge each other at all. Tozer’s afraid of what he might do if he even looks at him for too long. There’s so much fury raging inside him that he might burn up with it. He finds himself rubbing his wrists where the chains chafed his skin.
In which Tozer survives and remains shackled to a tongueless Hickey as the both of them return to England and no longer remember how to live without the other.

Summary
Solomon has a good idea of what he’s in for, agreeing to stay at Hickey’s place for a few nights. In the years they’ve known each other he’s never lived anywhere more than a couple of months, but it is consistently some shithole with damp walls and no heating.
Only when he actually sees Hickey in the extremely nice flat on the quays he turns up at does Solomon believe he really does live there. With a flatmate, obviously.
