Summary
They stick their fingers between the bars of your birdcage, letting the shadow of their hand play in your glow. It casts red across the floor, as if seeking to replace a stain scrubbed away by firm hand and plenty of vinegar. Their fingers curl slowly, as if testing the control over their own joints, before fanning out one by one. Time passes in the beating of your heart and the careless fall of hair across their face.
“I wonder,” Kris finally speaks, something in their speech mumbled and raspy. Reclaiming a voice that had not been their own for days. “Am I your cage? Or are you mine?”

Do you have skin anymore? You miss your shoes. Would it be weird to wear shoes now? To find new clothes? You want to drape yourself in fabrics, smother every inch of that glowing light you can never seem to shut out until your body is finally dull and darkened and done.
You wonder what happened to all your old clothes. They probably burned up with your face. Your name. Your home.
There’s nowhere left for you, is there?

This is probably the thousandth time Jean’s heard this exact thing come out of his mouth. Completely empty words from a man who does not even know what he’s actually apologising for.
It means less than fucking nothing to him.
Jean wants to tell him this, but finds that he doesn’t have the energy for it. Instead, he slumps against the railing and presses the heels of his hands into his eyes until he starts to see static.

It comes fast, in his experience, even when it feels slow. The choking rise of water, the crushing isolation of guilt, the sweet, burning slide of whiskey down his throat - it’s faster than you’d think. One second, the world is moving too fast around you. The next, it’s not.
This death, though? This one is not fast.
His veins are thrumming with (a virus, a death sentence, a penance) adrenaline, so fast and loud that it pounds in his ears, a static indistinguishable from the radio during a storm. Time is crawling now.
He wonders if it’ll ever speed up again. If that’s when he’ll know. If that’s when it’ll happen.
If that’s when he’ll die.
