    Ilya pulled Shane against his chest, wrapping his arms around him. "You would have. Because you are Shane Hollander. When Shane Hollander has goal—like goal to keep our baby safe—nothing gets past him." He pressed a kiss to Shane's temple. "Is blessing and curse, yes? But mostly blessing."

    Once, in law school, it would have been: wake up, consume enough caffeine to fund a small country, get in a last minute cram, and maybe kiss his then-girlfriend goodbye to get in extra time in the library.

    Infants, Henry knows, have cries designed to make sure they are noticed because they need other humans to help the person who’s given birth. This is a thing that Henry knows, it’s something the shelter learned in getting qualified for him and Pez to qualify as a Safe Haven in New York.
