    Summary

Kiriona slumped onto her palm, propped up by her elbow on the desk’s hard, polished surface. Behind all of the living chattel thrust into the broadcast’s abattoir protruded the barracks’ only entrance and exit lined (thanks to Ianthe, no doubt) with mindless half-rotted flesh constructs. They smelled awful. Upon entering the entry hall she had insisted that a window be opened but there weren’t any windows; no tiny portals out into the world to give her so much as a taste of something new. All she had was that distant door and whatever bled through it.

I didn't need a calendar. I could have counted it out in seconds, if not for the various times I'd been under sedation.

Palamedes Sextus and Camilla Hect attend JODCon 2024: The Journal of Death Dying's annual conference for multidisciplinary academics studying death and dying as a scientific, philosophical, and sociological phenomenon. Shockingly little time is spent actually discussing academia.

    Summary

On the night of the anniversary dinner, the Third and Sixth Houses end up working together—kind of, almost—with nearly good intentions to prove that neither of them were responsible for the deaths of Abigail Pent and Magnus Quinn.

Or, Gideon Nav was not paying attention and did not notice the complex, Empire-shaking, absolutely stupid political drama unfolding around her the night of the murder investigation.

Necromantic duels aren’t common on the Sixth, unless there’s an accusation of plagiarism that doesn’t get resolved through Oversight. Then it’s on, in the Lillian Sitta Memorial Lecture Hall, with everyone jockeying for position to see two hoary adepts try to maim each other with necromancy they haven’t used outside a lab in fifteen years.
