Another few minutes passed in silence after that, both of them too engrossed in their own homework to say anything further. Peter had put his headphones in so he could concentrate better without any distractions.
“Michael,” the guy says suddenly. Peter looked up at the sound of his voice, but he didn’t hear him quite clearly.
He pulls an earbud out of his ear. “What?”
The guy—Michael, apparently—clears his throat. “My name is Michael,” he doesn’t look at Peter as he speaks, he’s scribbling something on his notebook instead.
“Oh,” Peter breathes out. He didn’t expect the guy to introduce himself. “I’m Peter.”
“I know who you are.”

A low, staticky hum filled his ears like someone had turned the volume down on the entire world, muffling the hum of the servers and Tony’s ongoing monologue. His vision softened at the edges, fuzzy and gray, like looking through fogged glass after a hot shower. Sweat prickled along his spine even though the lab was perfectly climate-controlled at sixty-eight degrees, the kind of cool that usually felt perfect after a patrol. His fingers tightened around the mug handle until the knuckles went white, a desperate attempt to anchor himself.

There’s a pause.
Then, “You want Spider-Man?”
“In exchange for your intern,” High-heels affirms.
“Spider-Man,” Mr. Stark repeats. He sounds more amused than worried for Peter’s apparent safety.
