Summary
The ship came to their shores in the third year after the war ended.
One ship, just one, and Penelope stood on the clifftop near her husband’s palace and looked down upon the harbor below, and clenched her fist in her himation until it was wrapped around her so tight that it was imprinting its weave pattern onto her skin. Just one ship, and the men she could see disembarking were too few to be fifty, and none turned to hare instantly up the hill towards her.
Penelope turned away to head into the palace, to wait for the bad news to find her.
(odysseus chooses to sacrifice himself, and penelope chooses not to let him go)

Summary
There's a startled yip and Odysseus is face-to-face with an impossibly tiny puppy. It doesn't run away, which Odysseus counts as his first win of this trip, and cocks its head at him curiously.
The puppy is filthy, so muddy from the recent rains that its markings are almost impossible to see. It's much too young to have been separated from its mother.

Summary
Athena looks at Odysseus. Odysseus looks at Athena. They both look at the shutters over the door.
“We can’t be locked in,” Athena insists. “There will be another way out. We just haven’t found it yet.”
Odysseus doesn’t appear convinced, and any faith he might have had seems to flicker along with the overhead lights.

Penelope and Odysseus get stuck on opposite sides of town. Athena somehow finds herself babysitting. Telemachus is just along for the ride.
And at some point, Odysseus and Athena really are going to have to talk about what happened in Ikea…

Update on Chapter 3 (30/04/2026): I’m at 3k words and it’s going SO slowly. I know I usually write pretty quickly, I’m sorry it’s taking so long! I might end up splitting this chapter in half and uploading what I’ve got over the next couple of days (or maybe I’ll write a few hundred words of angst to break the block…)!
