Summary
A familiar shame radiates through Rook's body, tangling with the embarrassment already taking hold. She feels frozen in place for a moment, but when Emmrich tries again to explain to Taash exactly how much he isn't interested in her, the shame propels her to her feet and away from him, swiftly climbing the stairs opposite from where they're standing.
"Rook," Emmrich calls after her, his brow furrowed. "I haven't finished. You're still in pain."
She pauses, just below the top of the stairs. She can't meet his eye; her focus instead is on his hands, now resting on the back of the chair she'd just vacated. "I know how to deal with pain, Emmrich," she says, flatly. "It's fine."
Rook is used to not being wanted; it isn't surprising when Emmrich makes it clear he isn't interested, but it still hurts.

Emmrich is a professor within the Mournwatch; his close friend, Frederick Richter, has returned after a mysterious year-long absence and brought back with him a new assistant: his niece, Kahrin. This young woman, surrounded by gossip and intrigue, has made him curious. He finds himself drawn to her in a way he doesn't yet understand.
I fell deeply in love with Emmrich while playing DA4, as an autistic person myself I was sure that this man would be the kindest most paitent, and understanding of lovers. I wanted to write a love story between the two, something self-indulgent and to practise my writing.

"Does Lucanis know that you're here? That you've been coming here all this time?" She looked up into those gleaming magenta eyes that signified it was not the man himself but another entity standing above her chair, arms folded and staring down with an intense look across his shared face.
"Lucanis pretends to not know what he wants. He argues, he denies, he lies. It's so obvious!" Spite was getting more frustrated as he spoke, his words getting louder and voice coming out in a scratched hiss.
Sitting forward as if to stand, Myrael spoke in a soft murmur to calm the demon "Spite, now is not the time to discuss this. Let's get you back to bed, it's lat-"
"NO!" Slamming his hands down on the arms of her chair he caged her in place, fingers digging into the cushion so tight she could hear the threads protest, nose inches from her own, warm breath washing over her face and neck. That handsome face twisted in an expression of irate determination, the demon's eyes locked with hers showing more emotion than she'd ever been able to read in his host body's own.
"I'm going to show him what he wants."

Rook had been little more than a fledgling when Lucanis had last seen her, several years before he was sent to the Ossuary. Though he may have occasionally seen her around the Cantori Diamond he knew little of her other than she was the Fifth Talon’s younger half sister. He was more than surprised when she and Neve had turned up to assist him in a prison break. The more time he had spent with her, the more she continued to surprise him. And now months later he often found his thoughts drifting to her, even as he sat alone on his cot in the pantry.
