“Ilya, what are we gonna do?” Shane says.
Ilya finishes whatever he has been doing on his phone, and tosses it gently to the bed beside him. He crosses the room to Shane, stands in front of him, squeezes into his shoulders with his big hands, rubbing them like he means to warm them up.
“Looks like we will have a little vacation,” he says, with a big obnoxious grin.
Boston and Montreal are sent to Paris to play against each other in an exhibition series in January 2017. Ilya and Shane decide to stay in Paris for one more night. Just one more night, so they can talk. Maybe finally understand each other.
They aren't expecting a volcano to erupt in Iceland and close all the airspace in Europe, leaving them stranded there. Together.

Summary
A rookie's bad hit sends Ilya into the boards during the Boston-Montreal game. Shane's three weeks of broken Russian are barely enough to calm him down, but it's something.
But when the scans reveal something much worse, Shane and Ilya have to figure out how to be there for each other in ways totally unforeseen.

Summary
After the Boxing Day fight, they don't talk it out. There's no crash, no final words over instagram. Just a letter on a coffee table saying "I'm done" and a blocked number.
Shane's world crashes around him.
Now it's 7 years later. Shane is retiring, reminded of everything he and Ilya planned. After an off the cuff comment at his retirement press conference he hears from Ilya, for the first time since the fight, asking to go out for drinks.

“Huh. On second thought, maybe you are an asshole.”
The man’s cheeks flushed, blinking rapidly as if embarrassment was something new for him.
“I am Ilya. Rozanov. I play for the Boston Raiders, my face is plastered all over the city– sorry. This was rude of me to assume.” The man– Ilya– said sheepishly.
“I guess I haven’t been far enough into the city,” Shane muttered, most of his focus on dabbing at the stain on his Reebok undershirt.
“You are new here? Maybe I can… show you around?”

After being forced to quit hockey in juniors, Shane becomes a model. He avoids the hockey world until 2017, when he has a run in with Ilya Rozanov. Shane is out as gay and Ilya has already cut his ties with Russia, but that doesn't make things any easier for them.
