He thwacked the branch against Zhao Yuanzhou again, feeling childish and wildly freer than he had in years. Cypress needles scattered into the air. The sharp swats echoed off chamber walls grown thick with silence and sorrow.
Zhao Yuanzhou repeated the word again, “Fall,” but with a different target. Zhuo Yichen felt the swoop in his knees and dropped before he remembered he could resist the command, Zhao Yuanzhou had given him the power to resist. It must be, then, that he didn’t want to.

10 years into their marriage, Shen Zhao’er notices her husband has grown distracted. Her doctor’s instincts send her on a search for a diagnosis for Ji Heng’s ailment…but she may end up being the one who is cured.
The idea struck Zhao’er and it was so simple she should have thought of it from the start. “Then...while the children are away, what if I was Tian Qi again?”
Ji Heng’s hands jerked in hers, his body tensed before her, and rather than dissuade her, it made her ever more certain she’d found the mark, a physician homing in on the cure.
“I’ve dressed that way a lot over the years, haven’t I?” she said. “We’ve gone traveling and sat in teahouses together. ...What if you could have Tian Qi in your bed?”

Was this, then, Zhuo Yichen's true nightmare? Some vile hunger the creature must have revealed during their encounter earlier in the real world? He'd never said exactly what happened while Zhao Yuanzhou wasn't in possession of his own mind; none of them had. In the aftermath of Ying Zhao's loss, everything else had been overshadowed.
Or: Zhao Yuanzhou gets a little more than he bargained for when he tries to return Zhuo Yichen's borrowed cloak, everyone's subconscious desires come out, and absolutely nothing is resolved.

Summary
Zhuo Yichen bites his lip as Zhao Yuanzhou’s fingers slip inside his parted robes.
After months of back and forth, Zhao Yuanzhou finally convinced him that dual cultivation would be beneficial for all three parties. Zhuo Yichen is still learning how to circulate his yao qi; Zhao Yuanzhou is still rebuilding his strength; and, deep within Zhuo Yichen, Li Lun’s consciousness hovers, silent and watching, slowly regaining his power. He’ll need to reform his body at some point; if they dual cultivate, Zhao Yuanzhou had earnestly explained, he might leave Zhuo Yichen’s body more quickly. Zhuo Yichen should want Li Lun’s ominous, looming presence out of him, so he agrees.
