Wei Ying squints again. Looking closer, he’s now noticing the faint hint of crow’s feet around the man’s eyes when he smiles.
“I must be older than you by a good decade or two,” the man hums. “So, it is not too impossible that I could have grown up under your Lan-shushu’s care, too.”

And through it all, Wei Wuxian had sat there, waiting and waiting and waiting.
But the door had never opened.
Wei Wuxian’s fingers had curled into the silk sheets, the soft fabric wrinkling beneath his touch. He had listened. Every creak of the palace walls, every distant footstep, his heart had leapt. But it had never been Lan Wangji.
He had waited until the candles had burned to their bases.
Then he had waited longer.
By the time the first pale light of dawn had filtered through the embroidered curtains, it had been clear. Lan Wangji would not come.

Before, Wei Wuxian would jump into the water. He would get his robes dirty, lunging forward to grab a fish with bare hands which resulted in cuts from the scales. He had long learned how to properly catch a fish without so much as a scratch to the surface of his skin, but the imperial guards standing near would never allow him to dip even a toe into the clear water. Him hovering above the bank was enough for them to step forward.
Now he was a gifted war prize concubine to the second crown prince’s harem. He had a reputation to uphold. He had to pay attention to every action he took. He was an imperial prisoner in all aspects, an imperial prisoner who was allowed nightly into his warden’s quarters. One who was expected to strip his clothes and attend to the second crown prince’s every will. And it didn’t help that he wanted to.

Wei Ying slid his feet off the table ever so slowly and then he leaned forward and rested his chin on his palm. "And if I don't?" he asked cheekily.
"Then I'll have to kill you."
"Oh," Wei Wuxian said in mock surprise, "Well then can I at least know the name of the great paladin that will be taking my life?"
The man narrowed his eyes at him, but then he said, "Lan Wangji."
"Ahh, so they sent the great Hanguang Jun to put me in my place," he said. His eyes roamed over the length of the tall paladin, admiring the girth of his chest and the sturdiness with how he stood. "Would it help if I were to plead my case?" His eyes met the paladin's and he held his gaze. "If I were to beg for mercy?"
He felt a spark of something in his chest he hadn't felt in centuries when Lan Wangji's pupils dilated in surprise.

Vi shook her head as she scrolled, trying to clear the sting of the loss and the twisting, heated memory of Caitlyn’s form against her rattling around in her brain.
It didn’t work.
It never worked.
Vi still remembered their first fight clearly, even years later.
The image of Caitlyn walking into the ring was still fresh in her mind: the shocking blue of her eyes sparking under the bright lights, her body slender, but muscled, her angular face stoic and focused, her mouth a harsh line across her face.
Vi had been worried she was going to snap her in half.
She scoffed as she remembered just how fucking wrong she’d been.
Caitlyn had wiped the floor with her. She’d had to work for it - a change from her other fights, Vi found out later - but she had.
After that, her training regimen was pretty much exclusively focused on beating Caitlyn.
She hated losing.
