Then Johanna shows up on his doorstep and in need of help. But because he can't have "lady callers" or whatever the fuck his stone age headmaster thinks is going on, so he calls up his good friend and fellow professor Gwen Harris and accidentally plays Cupid.
But will Hob get his happy ending, too?
He can only Dream.

Summary
When Dream misses their appointment in 1989, Hob goes looking. He gets a nudge in the right direction from Crowley (Good Omens), enlists the help of Johanna Constantine (who exists at whatever point in time is necessary for the purpose of any story), and rescues his friend from the fishbowl. Then, left to his own devices with no way to contact Dream, he accidentally builds a temple (aka the New Inn), meets Calliope, and writes a book about his *ahem* endless life experiences. Dream finally notices.
Or, every time I saw a trope that I liked, I grabbed it and smashed it together and called it a story.

Hob Gadling, in turn, does not expect that his new friendship with a feisty exorcist and magician will lead to him not only learning the name of his Stranger, but to them running into each other in Johanna's ex-girlfriend's flat. Nor does he expect how changed he will find Dream to be after his long absence...

...and then she notices her sofa.
Or rather, she notices what's on her sofa.
After handing over the key to Hell to Dream of the Endless, Lucifer Morningstar fends off an attack by Azazel, an attempt to devour their grace and become the new Lord of Hell. Injured and having lost their memories in the process, and needing a place to lay low and recover, they're brought to the last place in the world that any self-respecting demon would look. Much to Johanna Constantine's dismay.
