“You…” he starts to say, and raises a hand that is almost trembling to Hunter’s arm. He drops it when Hunter flinches. “Your scars - I - what happened?”
Hunter swallows, and goes to answer - though he doesn’t have a fucking clue where to start, how to even explain what happened - but finds he can’t. He can’t - he can’t talk. There’s something caught in his throat, like a fishbone.
“And your - where’s-” he starts to say, and doesn’t finish his sentence because Hunter starts to sob. Full-body, painful sobs that completely wrack him. Hunter’s shoulders hunch and shake, he’s sobbing helplessly into his hand, soaking the corner of his sleeve.
Lurching forward, Hunter leans against Darius. He doesn’t know what he’s doing - he just. Stands there. Sobbing solidly against the man’s shoulder, unable to stop or move or do anything.

Summary
The kids were gone. They failed. It’s been over half a year.
There wasn’t a time limit to this. To finding them. To bringing them back home. But it still felt like a metaphorical noose tightening around their necks with each passed, wasted second. They were exhausted. And well past the point of being horrified at their situation that they were now seated, practically squatters, in the backyard of downright despondent.
The kids were gone. They failed. They kept failing. The heartbreak was something physical now. Clawing into their chests like it had a personal agenda to make them all hollow. And there was an anger there, burning and coiled tight enough to make them all feel brittle with it.
The kids, their kids, were still gone. And their millions of impossible, stupid, desperate plans kept failing.
But parents, as Darius was quick to catch on, were impossible, stupid, desperate things too. Stubbornness something etched into their titandammed bones, and it didn’t really matter that their millions of plans kept failing.
They were exhausted, and horrified, and miserable and angry. They kept coming up with a million more.

Summary
If you had told Darius before that one day he would ditch everything he had at the Emperor's Coven as well as his overall life for the Golden Guard, he would have laughed at you and called you insane.
Now here he was, running away from the castle and his life as knew it to save the boy from his abusive "uncle" before it was too late.
Now Darius and Hunter have to fend for themselves out in the boiling isles, and avoid Coven Scouts and recognition while they're at. Let alone get along.
But, maybe they can both learn that they can truly understand and care for each other, and maybe even find family in one another, after all they've been through.
Only time will tell.

Summary
Hunter’s life before being adopted by the Nocedas felt like a distant, cloudy dream. He only recalled fragments, each one never giving him any proper answers. An unfamiliar masked man, a castle that almost looked gold in the sunlight, and a man dressed in purple reaching out to him with wide green eyes. Then came his dreams, where he stood on a cliff overlooking an island with a colossal skeleton embedded into it, and where a familiar blond man (possibly his biological father) calls out to him. He also recalls waking at the park’s edge, white-hot pain pounding on the side of his head as he was rushed to the hospital. Ever since he was adopted, he eased into a peaceful life with his adoptive mother and eccentric sister, up until an owl stole Luz’s book and led them through a door to an eerily familiar world. Finding himself in a place called the Boiling Isles, and taken in by Eda the Owl Lady, Hunter finds everything all too familiar.

It’s not the first time Darius sees him sew something, nor the first time he compliments him on his work either, but the words manage to stick to his ears and keep ringing even after the man’s long gone from the room. That’s a nice jacket. A nice jacket. Has Darius ever complimented something other than his technique when he’s working on clothes? It might be a first.
He chews on his lip, looking intently at the finished jacket on his lap. Should he…? He looks around until he spots one of his notebooks and a pencil. Carefully folding the jacket to the side, he grabs the items and gets to work.

The saddest part is, Darius truly believed that he was prepared enough going into this. After all, they need to stop the Day of Unity at any cost, right?
Darius had been prepared to die tonight for the cause.
But Darius had not, evidently, been prepared to sacrifice children for the cause. That had not even occurred to him as an actual potential outcome here.
Clearly, Darius wasn’t being pessimistic enough.

Ever since her and the Owl Beast had come to their little… agreement, Eda no longer woke up in her beast or harpy forms. Well, that is, until this morning. Typically when she’s become the Owl Beast, her consciousness is overpowered by that of the owl. It’s thoughts become her thoughts, it’s feelings are her feelings. Sometimes she is able to reason with it until someone is able to feed her an elixir, but today it felt like she was screaming at a brick wall. No matter what she said, or what promises she offered up, the Owl Beast seemed dead set on its mission. So, with a heavy sigh and nothing else she could do, Eda decided that it was time she trusts the beast’s instincts, and let it have full control.
It was early, the Owl House still blanketed in the soft darkness of the night. Moonlight shone across the wooden floor, and the air was still. The Owl Beast stiffened and rose to its haunches, feeling— no, knowing— deep down that something was wrong.

“Oh,” Hunter said, disgruntled. He frowned pensively. “Like what?”
“I don’t know,” Darius sighed, exasperated. “It should reference something you like. Like a hobby, or an interest.”
Hunter stared at him. Darius was suddenly keenly aware that he might be treading on dangerous ground here. “Like… missions?”
