    (Post Spectre)

A despondent James returns to England alone and finds MI6 in a dire situation, with the Quartermaster at the centre of it.

    *

"Remember when I nearly lost my job in my first week because you asked me to make you disappear?” James struggled to hear him through the sounds of the crowd and the muffling of the scarf.

He tilted the corner of his mouth up, “How could I forget?”

Q continued, refusing to face James, “And how I lied to M about the smart blood-” James hummed, keeping his eyes forward- “and how I travelled by plane to personally warn you away from chasing Spectre, only for you to ask me for ‘a final favour’, which nearly got me kidnapped in a ski lift?” James did remember. He remembered hearing from Moneypenny how Q nearly got shot, too. She hadn’t been very happy about that.

“Are you finally cashing in?” he asked, the ball dropping. The theatrics were entirely unnecessary, though.

Q dipped into an alley, and James followed behind him, boxing Q away from the crowd.

“Can I trust you?” Q asked, instead of answering the question. “Can I trust you, like when you asked me to trust you, and I did, undoubtedly?”

    Summary

It happened on a Thursday, which really should have been the first indicator that something horrible was bound to open. Who offers to go out on a Thursday night to get drinks, knowing you’d have to get up the very next morning? And the worst of it all. He wasn’t a secret operative bent out on bringing down the government. He wasn’t an assigned assassin who decided to keep him alive, choosing instead to torture him in the worst way possible. He was just a terrible person who did a terrible thing. Plain. Simple.

“You were brave when you were little, too. In many ways, you were braver than me.” Theseus closed his eyes. "But I keep seeing you. As a child. In the woods with—with her. And I can't reach you. I can't stop it."

"Maybe because part of me," Newt whispered, "is still there."

    or:

The truth about the abuse Newt experienced as a child comes to light. But healing old wounds requires as much work as burying them, and while all anyone wants is for Newt to feel safe again, all Newt's allies, friends, and family have to fight for it.

    Summary

Something is attacking New York City, and by extension the magical community that lives there. With the threat of a dark revolution overseas, MACUSA is desperate to find whoever or whatever is responsible for these attacks and put a stop to them.

As a man who lives solely for his work, Percival Graves will not rest until the case has been solved. But with a frustrating lack of evidence or leads, the investigation is forced to consult the help of an... unusual man. A wizard with a briefcase of highly questionable legality, who is somehow both completely different to everything Graves is, and more alike than he'd ever imagine.

(Uses the film's plot as a guide but is ultimately divergent, i.e. Graves isn't Grindelwald)
