Chimney sat down across from them and leaned forward, elbows on knees. "Theo. Buddy. What's Eddie do when Buck says something dumb?"
"Chim,” Eddie groaned.
Theo thought about it. Theo took it seriously; he tipped his head back and squinted, doing real cognitive labor, and then he turned to the room at large, dropped his chin, let his shoulders fall about an inch, and said, with a long-suffering exhale that came all the way up from his tiny diaphragm:
"Buck."
The loft went insane.
It was perfect. That was the horrifying part. It wasn't a kid saying a name. It had the whole shape of it: the little drop at the end, the fondness sanded down into exhaustion so nobody would notice the fondness. Eddie had been saying that man's name that exact way since 2019 and had never once heard it from the outside, and now it was coming out of a preschooler in a costume, in front of everyone he worked with.

He wants to know which shampoo Regulus uses, so he can learn the scent of his hair. Which side of the bed he sleeps on. Which toothpaste he uses, so he could imagine what his mouth tastes like.
He wants to know whether his body runs cold or warm, and to recognize the sound of his footsteps before Regulus even enters a room. He wants to know what worries him and what makes him laugh.
He wants to lick the droplets of water running down his body after a shower.
Would James ever be satisfied?
Not as long as there were new things to discover.

Summary
Eddie teaches at an MMA gym to make ends meet in LA while he waits to start the Fire Academy. Meanwhile, Buck needs an outlet that isn’t random hookups so he decides to give MMA lessons a try. Buck hates Eddie immediately, but he isn’t sure if it’s the way he’s so horribly perfect or if it’s the way he nitpicks and constantly critiques everything Buck does in the gym. Maybe Buck didn’t intend to goad the guy into a rough, dirty hook up in the empty gym, but he isn’t exactly complaining either. When Eddie freaks out and says he won’t teach Buck or see him again because they made a mistake and Eddie is straight…well. Buck just takes that as a challenge.
