Aerion had said it at supper, his voice flat, his gaze never leaving the wine, as though Duncan were too insignificant to warrant even the courtesy of a glance.
"The year is over, and I have fulfilled my obligation to crown and country. We will go to Summerhall. My father will dissolve this farce. I shall be free of you."
Duncan had not replied. Not because he had nothing to say—his mind was a storm of words, each one beginning with "but" and ending with "please," each one dying on his tongue before it could draw breath.
In which Aerion demands a divorce, Duncan agrees without a fight, and the prince learns that getting what you asked for feels nothing like winning.

In another version of this story, in some far and distant world, it is Baelor “Breakspear”, Heir to the Iron Throne, who takes his brother Maekar’s mace to the back of the head during the Trial of Seven. It is on a grimy, hay-covered stone and dirt floor that he falls into the arms of the newly named Ser Duncan the Tall and takes his last breath. In that distant world, the Targaryen family falls to ruin in the aftermath of his passing, and not even the fabled Prince that Was Promised can reclaim the might of their family name.
But that world is not this one.
For instead of the Prince of Dragonstone receiving a sundering blow to the helm, it is Aerion “Brightflame” who suffers the wound instead.
