It isn’t that Will had been ignoring the party (specifically Mike). It’s just that they never reached out once he had left like they said they would, so like anyone else would have done he was petty and decided that he wouldn’t call or write to them until they did, which led to it being almost 2 years since he had talked to them.
Will was almost done with his sophomore year of high school and had been through so much change in just the past year. Midway through his freshman year he had met some friends because of his honors English class.

Canon Compliant/Rewrite but What if Will was a girl? AU<3
—In an interesting twist of events, wishing on a shooting star took Will back to his childhood when he first met his best friend except there was a change.. A huge one, really.
Will was a girl now.
So, now she had to wander all of these events related to the Upside-Down all over again but on the plus side, Will already knows what and how everything happens so maybe she can change a few things and save someone? Or will she be unable to save someone and be forced to live with the blood of someone dying on her hands?
And along with that, Mike was behaving differently. No longer dating Will’s step sister and always hovering around Will. Not being anything like the avoidant and El-obsessed boy he knew back then..
Will seriously needs a break.
AKA: Will is a girl with the knowledge of what happens in the future, Mike is not a bitch and the party is trying their best.

"Boys!” Hopper barked.
They broke apart instantly this time, Mike nearly fell again, but Will held onto him.
“I leave for one goddamn second,” Hopper snapped, voice rising, “ONE SECOND—”
“Hop—” Will started.
“No,” Hopper cut him off, pointing at Mike. “I scream at you, I leave the room for a second, and you think that means permission to continue—” he gestured wildly between them and stared right at Mike, “—DEFILING MY SON?”

“Will, if you were a girl, which one of us would you date?”
Will wasn’t sure how the question had come up, nor how he became the one on the receiving end of it. But now Mike, Lucas, and Dustin were staring at him expectantly, and he wasn’t sure he could find his way out of answering.
“I-what?” He shook himself out of his thoughts to focus on his friends.
Lucas sighed, “Just answer honestly Will, none of us will be offended I promise.”
“And you are asking this because?” Maybe stalling would annoy them enough that they would drop it altogether.
“We were arguing about which of us is the best boyfriend,” Mike offers like that explains everything.

Summary
Mike Wheeler and Will Byers are inseparable; it’s their last year of high school, and everything feels right where it belongs. Will spends most of his time helping Mike with The Weekly Streak newspaper. Mike spends a lot of his time trying to figure out how he’s going to meet the upcoming deadline for his big Valentine’s issue.
Their perfect world starts to fall apart when an unexpected basketball season whisks Will onto the court and into the surprising arms of Chance. Mike hates seeing this new development play out right in front of him. He’s a lot more helpless than he’d like to be. More than he’d like to admit, he’s foolishly jealous.
Mike lost Will once, but is he willing to lose him again to Chance?
