Summary
As they begin to load Ella into the back of the ambulance, Simon goes to climb in. Sean presses a hand to his shoulder. “I’m sorry, sir, family only.”
Simon darts a look at John, uncharacteristic panic darting across his face.
“He is family,” John blurts. Sean looks skeptically at him and John knows what he sees: a blond Englishman, Uncle Simon, who is clearly not blood related in any way to the child on the gurney. Without thinking, John says the very thing that he suspects is Simon’s ticket into that ambulance. He gestures to Ella. “She’s my sister’s daughter.” He locks eyes with Simon. “And he’s my husband.”

When Ella has a bad fall, Uncle Simon steps in to help. John makes an impulsive decision that turns out all right in the end.

Summary
His gaze skips over the cold fireplace, the weak light streaming through the bay window, and over to his alarm clock which reads 07:26. He frowns, swinging his feet over the side of the bed and reaching over to disable the alarm scheduled for 07:30. Just as he looks back out the window at the heavy fall of snow that he knows he’ll have to deal with soon, a sharp chhhhhh comes from outside.
John stills, listening, and after a few seconds it comes again, this time in an uneven rhythm: ch-ch-ch-chhhhhh followed by a light fwump. He frowns, standing and padding over to look out the window as the noise continues. The first thing he notices is a familiar truck, hastily cleared of snow, parked behind his Land Rover in the drive. Leaning forward he spots a tall, bulky figure bent over the walk, a shovel scraping over the concrete before launching bundles of snow into the yard. If the truck hadn’t tipped him off, he’d know that figure anywhere.

Summary
There’s a quality in Simon’s voice that John’s never heard from him before, but that he’d recognize anywhere. It’s the tone his niblings use when they aren’t sure if they’ve done something wrong. The hesitance he hears from another vet who isn’t sure if the story they’re about to tell is appropriate for present company because no one really debriefs you from a life of violence and killing and casual dark humor to a life without it. The sound of a man burned and turned away so many times that he never had a chance of discerning what he’d done wrong. The sound of a man who, nine times out of ten, was manipulated into thinking he was wrong in the first place.
The sound of a man who desperately needs a safe place to land, but only ever found it in bits and pieces if he found it at all.

Summary
Jiang Cheng showed Lan Jingyi the training grounds, the barracks, and the dining hall in relative silence. As they turned to the inner section of Lotus Pier, Lan Jingyi murmured, “Your mark is visible.”
Jiang Cheng’s hand flew to the spot just behind his left ear where his soul mark sat, a simple lotus drawn in black lines. He glanced at Lan Jingyi. “Yes,” he said slowly. “We don’t hide our marks in Yunmeng.”
Lan Jingyi looked at him a moment longer before looking away. “It’s a beautiful mark,” he said.
Something strange and warm bubbled in Jiang Cheng’s gut. “Thank you,” he replied slowly. “Are there—have you seen ugly soul marks?”
Lan Jingyi hummed. “Xichen-ge’s isn’t particularly aesthetic, in my opinion, but I would never say that to Lord Nie,” he said dryly, startling a laugh out of Jiang Cheng. When he looked back over at him, Jiang Cheng got the sense that the twinkle in his eye indicated a smile under the mask.

Jiang Cheng is under no illusions--soulmates are not a foregone conclusion--and when Lotus Pier burns, finding his soulmate is the least of his worries.

Soap’s eyes welled with frustrated tears and a broken snarl started to curl in his throat. He had just enough lucidity to use military instinct to push the anger down, not wanting to disobey an order from his Lieutenant even if his Alpha was screaming about it. “Sir, please, I’m sorry, don’t make m–”
Ghost cut him off before he could start begging in earnest. “Because I don’t want you to bite me while you’re like this. We can talk more when you’re better and we’re back on base. But for now, you’re going to let me do the work.”
____________________Or, the one where Soap gets dosed with an experimental drug that throws him into a flash rut, and Ghost's rescue attempt gets delayed so they decide fucking is the best solution.

Ghost arches a critical, amused brow just to watch MacTavish scowl. “Well, there’s your problem, sir. Maybe if you stopped fuckin’ women half your size you’d be gettin’ somewhere past the halfway mark.”
“And you’re suggestin’ what — that I find some girl and stick my prick up her arse?”
“It has to be a woman?”
MacTavish stares at him, struck silent. Ghost inches his knees apart and tries and fails to keep the smirk off his lips when his captain’s eyes drop. He watches as MacTavish’s throat bobs, swallowing heavily before he rasps, “I’m not gay, Riley.”
Ghost nods easily. He doesn’t spit the word, at least, doesn’t cringe away at the mere suggestion. Just a statement: he’s not gay, so he hasn’t considered asking a man. “‘S alright,” he grins, lilts his tone into something blithe and oblivious as he bends his knee, frames the bulge in his leggings just so — “More for me, I suppose.”
